Genesis Chapter 6

Gen 6:1

Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them: This verse is explaining that the following verses happened when humanity started multiplying. It's a general time period from Adam. I've heard this explained as there was a huge increase at one point, and that's when this took place, but the text doesn't say that.

The following story of Noah seems to follow right along with the book of Enoch Chapters 7 to 10. While this book isn't cannon, it's an interesting side study that seems to explain, in detail, the reason for the flood.

Gen 6:2

that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose: So when Adam started multiplying, angels lusted after human women and started marrying them. It's possible that this is the origin of polygamy and why we see Lamech with two wives. This is pure speculation because the Bible doesn't say it, but it does seem likely.

Don't get caught up by some people saying that the "sons of God" aren't angels. Of course they're angels. They're being compared to "daughters of men." The people who say they weren't angels say that the line of Seth started marrying with the line of Cain. Don't fall for it. If the scripture read plainly makes sense, don't try to make other sense of it.

It's very important to understand this verse because there are a lot of events that happen later which seem to point to God being an angry god. I'm sure everyone has heard someone say that the God of the Old Testament is an angry god but the New Testament God is loving. If you don't understand this verse, it's easy to come to that conclusion.

The book of Enoch, Chapter 7, Sect II (Link) explains this in more detail:
1. It happened after the sons of men had multiplied in those days, that daughters were born to them, elegant and beautiful.
2. And when the angels, the sons of heaven, beheld them, they became enamoured of them, saying to each other, Come, let us select for ourselves wives from the progeny of men, and let us beget children.
3. Then their leader Samyaza said to them; I fear that you may perhaps be indisposed to the performance of this enterprise;
4. And that I alone shall suffer for so grievous a crime.
5. But they answered him and said; We all swear;
6. And bind ourselves by mutual execrations, that we will not change our intention, but execute our projected undertaking.
7. Then they swore all together, and all bound themselves by mutual execrations. Their whole number was two hundred, who descended upon Ardis, which is the top of mount Armon.
8. That mountain therefore was called Armon, because they had sworn upon it, and bound themselves by mutual execrations.
9. These are the names of their chiefs: Samyaza, who was their leader, Urakabarameel, Akibeel, Tamiel, Ramuel, Danel, Azkeel, Saraknyal, Asael, Armers, Batraal, Anane, Zavebe, Samsaveel, Ertael, Turel, Yomyael, Arazyal. These were the prefects of the two hundred angels, and the remainder were all with them.
10. Then they took wives, each hoosing for himself; whom they began to approach, and with whom they cohabited; teaching them sorcery, incantations, and the dividing of roots and trees.
11. And the women conceiving brought forth giants,
12. Whose stature was each three hundred cubits. These devoured all which the labour of men produced; until it became impossible to feed them;
13. When they turned themselves against men, in order to devour them;
14. And began to injure birds, beasts, reptiles, and fishes, to eat their flesh one after another, and to drink their blood.
15. Then the earth reproved the unrighteous.

This verse also ties back to Gen 3:15. God's prophecy is of a seed war. The seed of Satan vs the seed of the woman. This is that war playing out.

Gen 6:3

And the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.": There are two ways to interpret this verse. One is that God limited the lifespan of humans to 120 years, and the second is that God is bringing the flood in 120 years. I had always heard that this was where the life of man was shortened to just enough time to make your eternal decision, then move on, but why then does Abraham live for 175 years? That would contradict this very verse. Because of this, I side with the interpretation that God was telling Moses (who put together Genesis) that Noah was given 120 years to build the ark.

Gen 6:4

There were giants on the earth in those days: Yes, giants. We are told by some that this is the result of the line of Seth and Cain, but that's absurd. The result of angel and human crossbreeding produced this line of nephilim. These nephilim are also mentioned in Num 13:33 where they are again called giants.

There are many stories from all over the world about giants. Here's a great book about giants in America: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1939149800. Don't let people try and spiritualize these things. There are things in the bible we don't understand and will not understand until they are revealed to us. There were giants, and they were the result of angels and humans producing offspring.

and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them: I'm so very glad we have this little interjection here. When we encounter more giants later when Israel comes to the promised land, this verse lets us know that just as before the flood angels were producing offspring with humans, they still were after the flood. And this still continues today, but very differently. Today, we have the abduction phenomena instead. It seems as though the angels are still trying to produce offspring with humans, but their goal now is to kind of integrate into human society.

Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown: Yes, giants. Not just famous people.

Gen 6:5

Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually: The result of the fallen angels mingling with humans was utter corruption. And not just of their morals and their turning from God, but also of their DNA through the intermingling of angels and humans. The entire human race was corrupted by this seed war to the point where people thought of nothing but evil.

Gen 6:6

And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart: I find it fascinating that God grieves. Most people say that the Old Testament God is an angry God, but that's not indicated here. He was grieved. And why was He grieved? The next verse explains why.

Gen 6:7

So the LORD said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.": God was grieved (Gen 6:6) because he knew that Satan had corrupted the human line and in order to protect the human race from becoming wholly corrupted, the hybrids had to be wiped out. This is a direct result of the prophecy of the seed war in Gen 3:15.

Gen 6:8

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD: And in direct contrast to the whole world becoming corrupted, living apart from God, and thinking continually of evil, we're introduced to Noah. This is following the same pattern we saw in the geneologies where there was a direct contrast between people just living and then we're introduced to Enoch, who walked with God (Gen 5:22).

Gen 6:9

This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations.: Huge implications here. What does it mean that Noah was perfect in his generations? That's not a normal statement. The normal explanation is that it's referring to "his generations," or immediate family. However, that doesn't make sense because only 8 people are saved from the flood, and Noah's father was Lamech (Gen 5:28-31). Noah's family was far from perfect.

What it most likely means is that Noah's family (the 8 who were saved) hadn't corrupted their genetic line by intermingling with the nephilim. The whole world had been corrupted by the prophecied seed war (Gen 3:15) except for Noah's family.

Noah walked with God.: Noah kept a proper relationship with God by walking in faith (Rom 1:16-17). While the world had turned away from God and lived according to their lusts, Noah walked with God. Noah is a direct contrast with the world who is being corrupted by fallen angels, both genetically and morally.

Gen 6:10

And Noah begot three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth: Shem is listed first here, but there is an unsettled debate as to who was actually born first. There are two very possible translations of Gen 10:21. One translation is "And children were born also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder (NKJV). The other is "Shem, Japheth’s older brother, also had descendants.Shem was the father of the descendants of Eber (ISV)." So this really is one of those arguments that can go both ways, but appears more logically to favor Shem being the eldest brother, simply because he's listed first whenever the sons of Noah are mentioned. Doesn't really matter either way though.

Gen 6:11

The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence: Corrupt in every sense. Worshipping other gods, doing their own thing without considering God. The violence included every imaginable form, including murder and rape.

Gen 6:12

So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth: This not only includes moral depravity, but genetic mutation, and intermingling with angels and humans. The fallen angels taught humans technology, and literally corrupted the flesh through genetic modifications.

Gen 6:13

And God said to Noah, "The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth: Apparently the modifications were targeted toward violence. Is this where dinosaurs came from? It's very possible. They weren't included in the ark, so God didn't recognize them as legitimate. God only included species that hadn't been genetically modified, and destroyed all other flesh to repair the damage done. Satan's seed war had come close to succeeding.

There seems to be a pattern in Satan's rebellion. God kind of hangs back and allows things to develop, and He steps in only when needed to stop the destruction of mankind. Some see this pattern as an actual war between God and Satan, but I don't see it that way. God isn't at war with Satan. God could destroy Satan at any time, but He doesn't. Satan is simply in rebellion against God and wants to take over God's throne. Impossible, but that's what Satan is trying to do.

Gen 6:14

Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch: What gopherwood is, nobody knows. We also don't know what was used for pitch, but it was some sort of sealant. Randall Price believes that because it was coated inside and outside, the wood is likely preserved from the elements, and we should be able to find it some day.

Gen 6:15

And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits: Most people agree that a cubit is 18 inches. Chuck Missler says that the design is exactly the proportions that would provide the most stability (Noah's Ark - Chuck Missler - YouTube).

Gen 6:16

You shall make a window for the ark, and you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third decks: Some scholars believe the window went all the way around the top, but that doesn't seem likely based on Gen_8:6-11. If the window went all the way around the ark, Noah should have been able to see that the waters were receded. The ark was 45 feet high and divided into three levels. It's calculated that on those three levels, you could store 180,000 sheep.

Gen 6:17

And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die: God Himself brings the flood waters, and God's intention is to destroy all living things on earth.

Gen 6:18

But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you: The covenant here is established after the flood. God promises never again to destroy all life on earth with water and gives us the rainbow as a sign of this promise (What is the Noahic Covenant? | GotQuestions.org).

Gen 6:19

And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female: I've often heard people argue that there's no way you can fit two of all kinds of animals into the ark. They argue that there's not enough space. However, you don't need two of every species, you only need two of every kind. For example, you wouldn't need two of every dog species, you'd only need two dogs. During repopulation, more species would be born through interbreeding and genetic mutations.

Gen 6:20

Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, and of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive: God further explains that the animals are going to come to Noah, and Noah will keep them alive. So Noah did not need to go out and gather the animals, they were delivered by God.

Gen 6:21

And you shall take for yourself of all food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and for them: God tells Noah that Noah is to gather the food for himself and the animals.

Gen 6:22

Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did: Is this a surprise? Noah is one of the few people in the Bible that walked with God. When God says to do something, we need to do it, even if it's something crazy like building a football field sized boat in the middle of the desert.
