Genesis Chapter 7

Gen 7:1

Then the LORD said to Noah, "Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation: Noah is a picture of Israel during the tribulation. Just as Noah is saved during the flood, Israel will be saved during the tribulation.

Gen 7:2

You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female: Isn't it interesting that you never hear that Noah was to take seven of the clean animals? We always are told that two of each kind were brought onto the ark. The number 7 is the number of completion: What is the biblical significance of the number seven/7? | GotQuestions.org.

We aren't told how Noah knew which animals are clean and which were unclean, but he probably didn't need to know because God brought the animals to the ark. The progression is: 7:5- Noah builds the ark; 7:7- Noah and his family enter the ark; 7:8&9- The animals go into the ark.

Gen 7:3

also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth: Again, 7 clean and two unclean of each type. A lot of people make the argument that the bible can't be true because they think there's no way they can fit two of each specie into the ark, but that's not what the bible says. The word translated species is zeh'-rah, which means seed, which would be better translated offspring. For example, Noah wouldn't have needed to bring seven pairs of cockerspaniels and seven pairs rottweilers, but seven pairs of dogs. Noah housed animals of each type, and repopulation was to take place through intraspecies evolution.

Gen 7:4

For after seven more days I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made: Again, the number 7. And the number 40. What is the significance of 40 days in the Bible? | GotQuestions.org. God will cause rain to fall for 40 days and 40 nights, flooding the entire world, and killing everything in it. Don't fall for people who say that the flood was regional. It was the entire earth.

Gen 7:5

And Noah did according to all that the LORD commanded him: So the question is, did Noah gather the animals, or did God? Refer back to Gen 6:20 to see that Noah was told to receive the animals that would be brought to him. Noah did not have to gather the animals.

Gen 7:6

Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters were on the earth: People in this period still lived a very long time, so six hundred was not uncommon. However, after Noah, people only live to 120 (Gen 6:3). It seems that through the world being repopulated by a single family, our genetic code was damaged, shortening our life spans to 120 years maximum.

Gen 7:7

So Noah, with his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives, went into the ark because of the waters of the flood: Noah and his family entered the ark seven days (the number of completion) before the flood waters came.

Gen 7:8

Of clean animals, of animals that are unclean, of birds, and of everything that creeps on the earth: Noah and his family must have been special to be able to be cooped up with all these bugs, rodents, all types of animals, and birds on a boat for such an extended time. Just thinking about it freaks me out.

Gen 7:9

two by two they went into the ark to Noah, male and female, as God had commanded Noah: This is tied into the previous verse. All the types of creatures on Earth came to Noah in pairs. God brought them into the ark during that seven day period before the flood.

What else in the bible is a period of seven, followed by judgment? Why, the tribulation, of course! It seems to me that Noah is a picture of Israel, the seven days are a picture of the tribulation and the flood is the judgement at the end.

Gen 7:10

And it came to pass after seven days that the waters of the flood were on the earth: I've heard it argued that God shut the door after Noah went in, so the door was closed for the seven days prior to the flood, denying salvation to those who were banging on the door. Based on what's written in scripture though, that's pure fiction. The door wasn't closed until all the creatures were on the boat.

Gen 7:11

In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened: So not only did it rain, whatever these fountains of the great deep are, they were broken up at the same time as it started raining. Water came from below and above.

There is plenty of evidence that the flood happened. At this point, it's pretty much undeniable:

Gen 7:12

And the rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights: The number 40 is the number of judgement. What is the significance of 40 days in the Bible? | GotQuestions.org

Gen 7:13

On the very same day Noah and Noah's sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah's wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark: This was a confusing verse for me because I had trouble reconciling it with Gen 7:4-5. However, the Pulpit commentary set me straight. In Gen 7:4-5, God is telling Noah that in seven days the flood will come, but that doesn't mean Noah entered the same day. He likely took the seven days to fully be prepared, and entered right before the flood came.

Gen 7:14

they and every beast after its kind, all cattle after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort: This is a repeat of Gen 7:8.

Gen 7:15

And they went into the ark to Noah, two by two, of all flesh in which is the breath of life: This is a repeat of Gen 7:9.

Gen 7:16

So those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him; and the LORD shut him in: Strange verse here. God gave the command to Noah to have pairs of all creatures put on the ark, male and female, then proceeded to bring them to Noah, lead them onto the ark, and then gave the credit to Noah for doing as God had commanded. Noah did build the ark, and stock it with food, but it's interesting that God then gives Noah credit for all of it, including putting all the animals on the ark too.

Gen 7:17

The flood engulfed the earth for forty days. As the waters increased, they lifted the ark and raised it above the earth: The number 40 is the number of judgment. In this first verse, we see the waters come and lift the ark.

Gen 7:18

The waters completely overwhelmed the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the waters: In this second verse, we see that the water completely covers the earth but the water was still increasing.

Gen 7:19

The waters completely inundated the earth so that even all the high mountains under the entire sky were covered: This third verse is the culmination of the flood waters, and they cover even the highest mountains. Even the secular world knows that there are marine fossils found on the top of Mount Everest. There are also hundreds of stories from almost every culture about a world-wide flood. At this point, people who do not believe in a biblical flood are exercising more faith than bible believers.

Gen 7:20

The waters rose more than twenty feet above the mountains: Not only did the waters cover the mountains, the mountains were covered more than 20 feet. Who knows exactly how much more, but it's impossible to imagine the amount of water needed to cover all the mountains. Really makes you wonder where it all came from, and where it all went.

The flood brings up a couple of questions. What were the fountains of the deep? Why did God flood the earth?

Gen 7:21

And all living things that moved on the earth died, including the birds, domestic animals, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all humankind: Notice that there is no mention of sea creatures. Only animals and the other creatures that live on ground were killed. Why did God kill them? Refer back to Gen 6:1-7.

  • Angels were sleeping with human women and producing offspring. These offspring were called Nephilim, and had corrupted the human genetic line.
  • Because the human bloodline was poluted with angel DNA, it had an effect on the collective human behavior, such that humanity was completely given over to sin.
  • Only Noah and his family had a pure bloodline. The rest of the world had been corrupted, and it follows that the animal kingdom had been corrupted as well and needed to be reset.

Gen 7:22

Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died: Again, we see it repeated that only the creatures that live on the ground and breathe air died. This must be important.

Gen 7:23

So He destroyed all living things which were on the face of the ground: both man and cattle, creeping thing and bird of the air. They were destroyed from the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained alive: This is very clear about what died. All the animals, humans, nephilim, the corrupted DNA lines, birds, and anything else living on the face of the ground. An interesting aside, this would include dinosaurs, if they were even created by God. It is entirely possible that dinosaurs were a result of genetic modification and were wiped out by the flood as a result.

Gen 7:24

And the waters prevailed on the earth one hundred and fifty days: The rains lasted 40 days and 40 nights, plus these 150 days, so the flooding portion of the flood lasted 190 days.
